The two types of hearing aid batteries

Choosing the right power source for you

There are two main types of hearing aid batteries: rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and disposable zinc-air batteries. While both options have their place, it’s safe to say that rechargeable technology has become very popular. It's not only longer-lasting and more sustainable but offers the convenience of charging your hearing aids at the end of each day, so you don't have to worry about running out of power at inconvenient times.

Rechargeable lithium-ion hearing aid batteries

Rechargeable hearing aids are quickly becoming a popular choice for their long-lasting power and eco-friendly design. Instead of replacing batteries, you simply place your hearing aids in their charging station overnight, ensuring they're ready to go each morning.

Pros

  • Environmentally friendly

Reduce your environmental impact by minimising battery waste.
  • Long-lasting power

Enjoy consistent performance throughout the day without the need for frequent battery changes.
  • Ultimate convenience

Say goodbye to the hassle of replacing batteries – just charge and go!
  • Cost-effective

While the initial investment may be slightly higher, you'll save money on replacement batteries in the long run.

Cons

  • Requires maintenance

It's important to keep your hearing aid clean and in good working order to ensure the rechargeable battery performs optimally.
  • Battery replacement by manufacturer

While long-lasting if cared for properly, rechargeable batteries typically need to be replaced by the manufacturer, ensuring proper handling and optimal performance.

Disposable zinc-air batteries

Zinc-air batteries are disposable, meaning they need to be replaced when they run out of power. To make it easy for you to do the right thing for the environment, we offer a free exchange program at all our clinics. Simply bring in your used batteries when you're picking up a fresh pack, and we'll take care of the recycling.

Pros

  • A convenient choice

Disposable batteries are a common choice for many hearing aid models. They're convenient and don't need a separate charging unit.
  • Widely available

They are easy to use and don't require any recharging station.
  • Easy to use

Simply remove the tab to activate the battery.

Cons

  • Less environmentally friendly

Disposable batteries contribute to environmental waste.
  • Ongoing expense

You'll need to regularly purchase replacement batteries.
Choosing the right size

Zinc-air battery sizes

Zinc-air batteries come in four different sizes, each indicated by a specific colour code. The size you need depends on your hearing aid model. Larger, more powerful hearing aids, like Behind-The-Ear (BTE) models, use larger batteries, while smaller In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aids use smaller ones to ensure a comfortable fit.
